Golden Paste Recipe-For You and Your Dog!

Golden Paste is a wonderful addition to any dogs diet. Packed full of anti-inflammatory turmeric, cinnamon and ginger, golden paste can be used in many creative ways. Oh, and dog-moms and dads can share in the fun too!

Stella and I share this golden paste recipe that I keep stocked in the fridge. For Stella, she gets a teaspoon with her meals, sometimes spread inside a kong, or frozen for a summertime treat. We use golden paste as an alternative to peanut butter with a healthy kick!

I personally like to use golden paste in lattes, skincare, and curries. Turmeric has a brilliant color and a lovely earthy/spicy flavor, it goes great with coconut milk, sweetened nut milks, and in in meat rubs.

In this post, I'll share with you our base recipe for golden paste, as well as two creative ways to use it for yourself, and your four legged pal!

Basic Golden Paste Recipe: This is for a very small batch, you can scale it up as much as you'd like.

1/8 cup Virgin coconut oil

1/4 cup Turmeric powder

2 tbsp Fresh Ginger

1 tbsp Ground Cinnamon

In a small saucepan, add all of your spices and coconut oil. On medium-low heat, begin cooking the mixture, stirring frequently until the oil completely melts. It should have the consistency of a thick paste with a bright orange/ochre color.

Once fully melted, transfer into a jar and store in the fridge.

Golden Paste will remain fresh for about two weeks in the fridge.

You can play around with different ratios of what spices you like. Sometimes I will make Golden Paste with just cinnamon and ginger around the holidays for lattes, sometimes I'll make one that has black or Aleppo pepper in it for cooking. It's really up to you! (Keep in mind, if you change up the spices, it may not be safe for dogs!) The consistency of the mixture is what matters the most, so keep wet to dry ratios the same in your own version.

How I Feed Golden Paste to Stella-

Mostly, I add Golden Paste directly to her food. I've noticed that she really enjoys the extra flavor and oil. The coconut oil has been great for her skin and coat, and the ginger helps her stomach on days when she isn't feeling great. Ginger is great for upset stomachs, which Stella struggles with from time to time.

This is her dinner tonight with the fresh Golden Paste I made today!

Vegan Golden Paste Coconut Curry (For People)

This is my go-to lazy weeknight dinner. It utilizes whatever vegetables you have in the fridge, and is endlessly riff-able. This is my basic recipe (and what I'm having for dinner tonight!)

Ingredients:

1 tbsp Golden Paste

Basmati Rice

3 Bay Leaves

5 cloves Garlic

Mixed Vegetables (Whatever you have, I'm using snap peas, carrots, onion and tomatoes. About 1 lb)

1 can of chickpeas

1 can Coconut Milk

1 tbsp Curry Powder (I'm using curry powder + Garam Masala)

Start cooking your rice with bay leaves and set aside.

In a medium pot, sautee onion and garlic in olive oil until translucent. Add curry powder, and cook for about one minute or until fragrant. If you like it spicy, add red pepper flakes, or your favorite hot chili sauce.

Add in your chopped vegetables, and toss with the onion mixture until nicely coated. Sautee for another minute or two, until vegetables are slightly tender.

Add in your can of chickpeas, toss, and sautee for another two minutes.

Pour in the entire can of coconut milk, 1/2 to 1 can of water or stock, and a tablespoon of golden paste. Stir until well combined, then simmer on medium-low until vegetables are fork-tender. The coconut milk should just cover all of your vegetables. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Once the curry is done, serve over rice and top with cilantro, chopped peanuts, or sesame seeds. Enjoy!

Thanks for reading, and as always, I hope you learned something here you can share with your pup!
