DIY Snuffle Mat for Mental Stimulation

Snuffle Mats are a great rainy day activity for any pup. To use: Hide a bunch of your pup's favorite treats in the snuffle mat, and let them use that powerful nose to find them!

This toy is a great up-cycled project using old clothes, I used three tee shirts and a pair of jeans.

Snuffle Mat

Materials:

Inside seam of Jeans

3 Tee shirts

Scissors

Crochet hook

Active Time: 1 hour

Cut the tee shirts into strips. I cut the shirts across horizontally, and then cut them in half. You can vary the width of the strips, It's up to you! Pull the t shirt strips slightly so they roll onto themselves and stretch out some.

Cut out the inseam of the pair of jeans, from one ankle, across the crotch seam, down to the other ankle. Leave about 1" on either side of the seam, to ensure the stitching doesn't come apart. You will end up with a large, tough seam that will act as the base for building the snuffle mat.

Tie the tee shirt strips onto the jean inner seam, making sure to leave as little space as possible between each knot. As much as possible, keep the ends of the strips facing he same direction, laying on one side of the seam.

Continue to tie the tee shirt strips to the inseam, pushing each knot close to the one before it. This is the most time consuming part of the process. It's important to keep the knots close together to give it structure.

Now that your entire inseam is covered in tee shirt ties, trim the strips so that they're all the same length. The length is up to you, but I recommend cutting them to about 4-5 inches in length.

Begin to spiral the rope into a big disk. Using extra strips of fabric, tie the inseam together to hold its disk shape. I find a crochet hook to be especially useful at this stage, but you don't need one.

Tie the piece to itself every quarter turn or so.

Once you've secured the mat into its circular form, take some time to tie down any floppy or loose parts with extra strips. The snuffle mat should be somewhat rigid and shouldn't pull apart easily.

Flip the mat upright, sprinkle some treats on to the mat, and fluff the mat so that the treats fall to the bottom. Let your pup enjoy this sniff-and-search toy whenever you're looking for an enriching solo game!
